Border to Border – Entre Líneas @ Monterrey’s International Film FestivalDe Frontera a Frontera – Entre Líneas en Festival Internacional de Cine de Monterrey
The Monterrey International Film Festival has become one of the most important cultural events in Mexico. Founded in 2000 as the Voladero International Film and Video Festival, it has shown more than a thousand films from all five continents, not only promoting film culture in Monterrey but also bringing together the viewpoints of a great many filmmakers that come together in Monterrey each year.
The fifth Monterrey International Film Festival will be held from August 21st to the 29th 2009, with the support of the Nuevo León Council for the Arts, MMCinemas, the National Council for Cultura and the Arts, the Nuevo Leon Filmmakers Guild, and a large number of sponsors that year after year support this event.
The festival is conformed by a varied and diverse program: The Official Selection of Short and Feature Films in Competition, showcases of Mexican, Latin American and International films, guest films and premieres, lectures, and other complementary events such as the Social Vision showcase for documentary films dealing with relevant social topics that affect the filmmakers’ communities.
El Festival Internacional de Cine de Monterrey es un evento cultural que se ha consolidado como uno de los más importantes del país. Con nueve años de trayectoria, desde su fundación en el año 2000 como el Festival Internacional de Cine y Video Voladero, el evento ha exhibido más de un millar de películas de los cinco continentes del mundo fomentando no sólo la difusión de la cultura cinematográfica en la ciudad, sino también el acercamiento de los puntos de vista de una gran cantidad de cineastas que convergen año con año en Monterrey.
La quinta edición del Festival se realizará del 21 al 29 de agosto del año 2009, y es organizado por MMCinemas y el Consejo para la Cultura y las Artes de Nuevo León con el apoyo del Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes y el Gremio de Cineastas de Nuevo León y una gran cantidad de patrocinadores que año con año han impulsado el evento.
Durante el Festival se presentan una gran diversidad de programas: a selección oficial de largometrajes y cortometrajes en competencia, estrenos de películas mexicanas, latinoamericanas e internacionales, conferencias, cursos y talleres, el Día de la Industria y el rally Música… ¡y Acción!, además de la sección Visión Social que brinda espacio a cintas de ficción y documentales que traten temas de importancia social en México o su país de origen y por supuesto los homenajes internacionales, nacional y a una figura de la cinematografía del país invitado.

The director of La Pared and Entre Líneas shares the empowering experience of realizing creative visions
Seeing the creative process through isn’t always the easiest thing to do. The odds of completing a project for most young filmmakers, especially working in the film industry during a downsizing economy, seem against them. The statistics for women in film production are even more staggering: According to film industry researcher Martha Lauzen’s 2007 Celluloid Ceiling Report, women only comprised 15% of all directors, executive producers, producers, writers, cinematographers, and editors working on the top 250 grossing films in the U.S. Yet creative women like Maru Buendia-Senties are making cracks in the ceiling by making socially relevant films that don’t compromise their visions. Through her independent company Bloodbank Productions she premiered her latest creative vision, Entre Lineas (Between The Lines), at this year’s SXSW and presented an encore screening on opening night of M.A.L.I. Women’s Film & Performance Arts Festival in Austin, Texas. [Read More]The Lipstick Pages were created on 2003 by aSoutheast Texas resident and they evolved evolved from a solo paper zine project to a fledgling but promising online magazine based in Austin, TX. It celebrates the achievements of women who aren’t necessarily blips on the pop culture radar – from innovative artists who confront social issues on and off canvas, to entertaining musicians who make their personal messages the political to fans. As well as featuring photography, short fiction, and more – with a feminist p.o.v.

La directora de La Pared y Entre Líneas comparte su experiencia sobre el proceso de realizar proyetos filmicos con visiones creativas.
Llevar acabo el proceso creativo de principio a fin, no es una tarea facil. Las probabilidades de completar un proyecto filmico para la mayoria de los jovenes cineastas, especialmente ahora que la economia se ha visto en aprietos, no son muy favorables. Y las estadisticas muestran que esta tarea es aun mas dificil para las mujeres cineastas; segun el estudio hecho por Martha Lauzen, investigadora sobre la industria del cine, Celluliod Ceiling Report (2007), solo el 15% de todos los directores, productores ejecutivos, productores, escritores, cinematografos, y editores que trabajan en peliculas grandes en los Estados Unidos son mujeres. Aun al no tener a las estadisticas de su lado, mujeres creativas como Maru Buendia-Senties intentan que su voz se escuche al crear peliculas socialmente relevantes y sin comprometer sus visiones. Por medio de su compania independiente Bloodbank Productions ha logrado estrenar su ultima pelicula, Entre Lineas (Between The Lines), en el festival SXSW y abrio en el festival M.A.L.I. The year’s theme is sustainability; like most everyone, artists are trying to see their way through hard times, and POW hopes to suss out “how we can sustain ourselves as creative-industry people.” Another theme of the times – war – seems to have emerged in this year’s work as well, something that makes sense to POW. “[Women] are the aftermath of war,” she explains, “be it domestic war or a physical war or a war we don’t know we’re in.”
The most literal example of that theme is probably “Armed Defense,” Irina Patkanian’s short about a man who barricades himself against a nonexistent enemy, playing out the idea that constant vigilance, contrary to popular belief, can make us only “more and more afraid,” says the director. War takes many forms, of course, and can mean anything from the war on women’s bodies – see “Fry Bread Babes,” which director Steffany Suttle says is the first film about body image issues and Native American women – to the war on the “other,” explored in Maru Buendia Senties’ “Entre Líneas,” about friends on opposite sides of the Mexican-American border.

Entre Líneas will be available for viewing at the CFC Film Festival Marketplace through its Digital Marketplace Library 2009, accessible to industry delegates including buyers, distributors, and festival programmers looking for all manner of films. Last year over 400 shorts were picked up for broadcast or distribution as a result of being included in the Marketplace.

Entre Líneas has been selected to open the film festival May 28th 2009 in Austin, TX.M.A.L.I. uses media and communication to reduce stereotypes, cultivate expression and teach media literacy that produces and promotes cultural interaction in the arts.
The festival is an outlet to view, interact, network and purchase the works of female artists of diverse backgrounds and cultures. The artists involved provide a non-commercial and conscientious outlook about their perspective.
Entre Líneas ha sido seleccionada para abrir la sección de cine del festival el dia 28 de Mayo del 2009 en Austin, TX.M.A.L.I. emplea los medios de comunicación para reducir estereotipos, cultivar el arte expresión y enseñar métodos prácticos para que estos medios promuevan una interacción cultural con las artes.
Este festival es un portal para ver, interactuar, hacer conecciones y promover los trabajos de estas artistas de diferentes culturas. Las artistas involucradas ofrecen una visión original en sus trabajos.
