about

Maru Buendia-Senties Princess Grace Award Recipient (2007) obtained her MFA in Film Production at the University of Texas at Austin in December 2008, currently working at Troublemaker Studios. She is dedicated to making films that communicate her cultural heritage and explore the interaction of culturally diverse societies. In addition, she is just as adept at portraying deep interpersonal connections and unique idiosyncrasies that connect us all as humans.
Born in Mexico City and having been raised in the Mexican-American border in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and El Paso, Texas, director Maru Buendia-Senties has obtained a good understanding of both cultures, how they interact with each other and their most common day to day tribulations, including its many social divisions and cultural barriers. Therefore, she enjoys to write and direct films that show her Mexican heritage under a better light than the one it has been usually portrayed in the past, whether it’s under the Mexican or American scope. Her experience of biculturalism has exposed her to two different cultures that in some cases merge together and in others drift apart. Each culture has become a part of her, that’s why she wants to share the greatness of both Mexican and American cultures, as an attempt to leave behind typical stereotypes and prejudices of both cultures.
“Film is my art, the best way for me to share my thoughts, fears, dreams, and ideas. To freely express myself and see the audience get in touch with my work makes me the artist that I am. Filmmaking is demanding, bringing with it intense trials and tribulations, but the rewards can be just as powerful. I have been fortunate enough to experience both extremes and each trial only strengthens my passion for film.”
